Hydration refers to the water content inside your skin cells, while moisture relates more to the oils and lipids that help seal that water in to prevent evaporation. For example, adding a hydrating serum with ingredients like glycerin can attract and hold water within your skin layers. Meanwhile, moisturizing creams rich in oils such as shea butter or petrolatum create a barrier to lock that hydration in. I once struggled with dry skin even though I was using thick moisturizers. Later, I learned that without proper hydration, moisturizers alone couldn’t fully restore my skin’s suppleness. Incorporating hydrating products like gel-based masks or serums alongside moisturizers dramatically improved my skin texture. This balance helps reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL), a key factor the article mentions regarding healthy skin barrier function. Another important point is to avoid products that falsely advertise hydration but only provide surface oils without replenishing water content, which can sometimes worsen skin dryness over time.
