My regrets

As a derm, I wish I started this sooner 🥹 😭

... Read moreLooking back, one of the biggest lessons I've learned as a dermatologist is how critical consistent skincare routines are, especially those started early on. For example, using a ketoconazole-based dandruff shampoo not only fights dandruff but also helps slow down hormonal hair loss by blocking DHT—a step I wish I'd taken much sooner. Overplucking eyebrows was another regret; now I apply minoxidil (Rogaine) to help regrow fuller brows, but prevention would have saved a lot of effort. Sun protection is non-negotiable. It's the one skincare habit I am firmly committed to and one I truly believe everyone should prioritize from a young age. UV damage accumulates silently, leading to pigmentation, wrinkles, and increased cancer risk. Alongside that, incorporating azelaic acid into my routine transformed my approach to treating dark spots and redness—this underrated ingredient is a powerhouse for calming skin and maintaining an even complexion. Sleep habits also make a surprising difference. Sleeping with a silk or satin bonnet dramatically reduces broken flyaways, preserving hair health and minimizing damage. Body care shouldn't be neglected either: glycolic acid works wonders on rough patches like cracked heels and crepey hands, helping to exfoliate and rejuvenate these areas effectively. Mandelic acid combined with CICA has been key in firming up my neck skin, preventing early signs of crepiness below the chin and jawline—something often overlooked but highly important for an overall youthful look. Lastly, simple hand slugging—applying Vaseline and wearing gloves overnight—remains my go-to for maintaining soft, hydrated hands. Starting these practices earlier would have saved me years of skincare struggles, but it's never too late to adopt healthier habits. If you want to protect your skin and hair long term, consider these dermatologist-approved tips my younger self would have embraced wholeheartedly.
