One of the most difficult aspects I experienced after having children was the profound shift in my identity. The expectations I placed on myself became heavier, and I found myself struggling to recognize the woman I used to be. This internal struggle is common, as many mothers face the challenge of redefining who they are while meeting new demands. What helped me the most was adopting the mindset of "first things first, I’m first." This meant carving out pockets of time where I could reconnect with myself, whether that was through self-care rituals like getting my nails done or simply allowing myself to rest without guilt. It’s essential to understand that motherhood doesn’t have to erase your individuality; rather, it transforms it. Adjusting expectations plays a crucial role as well. The life I had before children wasn’t coming back, and that was okay. I learned to accept that some things would get harder—not to discourage myself, but to prepare mentally for the ongoing evolution motherhood demands. Each child brings a new chapter in this transformation, and with each, I adapted what I expected from myself. Moreover, it’s important to acknowledge the intense physical and emotional changes postpartum, such as the feelings of being overwhelmed or even disconnected. I remember feeling like I was bleeding and changing in ways I couldn’t control, yet embracing this vulnerability eventually made me stronger. Recognizing that this metamorphosis is part of the journey helped me develop compassion not only for myself but also for other mothers navigating similar challenges. In summary, motherhood doesn’t make your life inherently harder, but the shift in expectations and identity can be a heavy burden. Prioritizing yourself and adjusting to your changing reality can make this transition smoother. Remember, you’re not alone in this evolution—every mom goes through her own unique journey of growth and change.
