We love the wildlife around here

2025/9/9 Edited to

... Read moreThere's something truly magical about observing wildlife in its natural setting, and for us, that magic often comes in the form of whitetail deer right here in Pennsylvania. If you're like me and constantly searching for the 'best places to see deer in their natural habitat', you might be surprised to learn that sometimes, the best spots are closer than you think – or can even be created! Our own little piece of Pennsylvania has become a sanctuary where we get to enjoy watching these beautiful animals daily. It's not about hunting; it's about coexistence and appreciation. The OCR from our image perfectly captures it: "Why don't you hunt the deer on your land? Because we enjoy watching them and we love that the mommas trust us enough to bring their babies around." That sentiment truly sums up our philosophy. So, how can you find or create your own special spot to witness whitetail deer? Here are some tips based on our experiences: 1. Understand Their Habitat Preferences: Deer typically prefer areas where forests meet open fields, known as 'edge habitats'. These provide cover for safety and bedding, along with access to food sources like grasses, leaves, and agricultural crops. Look for dense thickets, woodland borders, and areas near water sources. 2. Timing is Everything: Deer are most active during dawn and dusk. These crepuscular hours are when they move from bedding areas to feeding grounds. Early morning just after sunrise or late afternoon leading into sunset are prime viewing times. Patience is key! 3. Be Still and Blended: Deer have incredible senses of smell and hearing. If you want them to feel comfortable enough for "mommas to trust you enough to bring their babies around," you need to be as unobtrusive as possible. Wear muted colors, avoid strong scents (perfumes, colognes), and move slowly and quietly. Often, sitting quietly in a good vantage point for an extended period is more effective than actively searching. 4. Look for Signs: Even if you don't see a deer right away, look for signs of their presence: tracks, droppings, rub marks on trees from bucks, and browse lines where they've nibbled on vegetation. These clues can tell you where they've been and where they might return. 5. Ethical Viewing Practices: To ensure a positive experience for both you and the deer, always maintain a respectful distance. Never feed wild deer, as it can disrupt their natural diet, make them dependent on humans, and encourage them to gather in unnatural numbers, increasing disease risk. A good pair of binoculars or a camera with a telephoto lens allows for close-up views without intrusion. 6. Creating a Deer-Friendly Environment: If you have land, consider planting native vegetation that provides both food and cover for deer. Avoiding pesticides and creating a quiet, undisturbed area can encourage them to visit. We've found that simply respecting their space and letting them be has fostered an incredible level of trust. Watching a fawn take its first wobbly steps, or observing a doe cautiously leading her young through the tall grass, is an unparalleled joy. It's these moments that remind us why we cherish this wild living and why we truly enjoy watching them. By being mindful and respectful, anyone can discover their own 'best place' to connect with these magnificent creatures.
