Powers Are Trouble…They Killed My Parents! 😭
I just finished a brand-new Twisted Tale called “Suddenly Super”. Basically, Syndrome, the villain from The Incredibles, located and lured the Parr children to his hideout, where they were unknowingly molded to his malignant whims. He secretly told Violet (the shy force-field wielding teen of the Parr family) about a serum that could erase her powers, of which she despised.
As the novel continued, Violet increasingly relied on an unstable well of bitter rage (Syndrome falsely told her that another villain killed her parents) to fuel and control her superpowers. I was truly horrified at the end result of Syndrome’s scheming and manipulation.
Also, there was a bit of mild romance between Syndrome and his underling, Mirage, which was a fun treat to observe. All in all, this simmering, brooding novel deserves to be brought into the light of the reading community.
Spice Level-🫑
After diving deep into 'Suddenly Super,' a Twisted Tale by Jen Calonita, I just had to share more about why this book utterly captivated me! You know how in the original Incredibles, Syndrome has this whole vendetta against supers? Well, this story really expands on that, pushing the boundaries of the 'what if' scenario. It makes you ask: why did Syndrome kill the supers, and how far would he go to achieve his vision of a world without heroes? Here, his manipulation isn't just about revenge; it's about absolute control, and he masterfully preys on Violet Parr's deepest insecurities. I mean, seeing Violet's powers, her iconic force field, twisted into something fueled by bitter rage was unsettling yet absolutely brilliant. The original movie just scratches the surface of her shyness, but imagine that vulnerability being weaponized! This book explores what truly makes a super villainess – it’s not just about flashy powers but about how easily a hero can be swayed when their emotional foundations are shattered. The OCR mentioned "dark, glowing-eyed Violet" and "unexpected villain arc," and let me tell you, 'Suddenly Super' delivers on that promise! Her powers, usually defensive, become instruments of destruction under Syndrome's insidious influence. It’s a chilling transformation to witness. And let's talk about Syndrome himself. Many wonder, 'how did Syndrome get his powers?' In this tale, it's less about inherent superhuman abilities and more about his genius-level intellect and advanced technology. He’s the ultimate manipulator, turning even the strongest individuals, like Violet, into pawns in his grand scheme. His gadgets, his inventions, and his cunning mind are his true "powers," allowing him to stand as a formidable foe against those with natural abilities. This story really highlights his strategic brilliance, making his plot against the supers even more terrifyingly plausible. The premise of 'What if Violet became an agent of Syndrome?' isn't just a gimmick; it's a profound psychological exploration of identity and morality. The "non-stop action" mentioned on the cover isn't solely physical; it's the intense internal battle Violet faces as she grapples with Syndrome's cruel lies about her parents. It's a fantastic example of a 'super syndrome' in action – not a medical condition, but a societal one where a villain can create his own 'supers' for his nefarious goals, blurring the lines between hero and villain. This book truly delivers an emotional punch. If you're looking for a read that delves into character depth and challenges your perception of beloved heroes, 'Suddenly Super' is definitely one to pick up. It makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about the Incredibles and the nature of power itself!
