Chapter One: The Window

Mariah leaned against the chipped window frame of the apartment she had known her whole life, her elbows pressing into the peeling paint. From the street, she looked like any other young woman pausing at the window, pink rollers neatly set in her hair. But this wasn’t idle waiting. The robe draped over her shoulders was borrowed, too fancy for the tiny two-bedroom she shared with her mother and younger brother. It shimmered faintly in the dying light, a hint of the life she wanted but didn’t yet have. Still, she knew the weight of being “the girl from the block” would follow her inside.

It wasn’t just about the paycheck. The job promised escape escape from lights that flickered when bills fell behind, from meals stretched with broth and rice, from the hollow quiet of poverty that echoed louder than any noise. It promised sneakers for her brother that didn’t come secondhand, a chance for her mother to stop working double shifts at the nursing home, maybe even a savings account with her own name on it. She thought of every time someone had told her she wasn’t “the right fit,” of all the jobs where her name had been lost in the pile of applications. She thought of the diner that closed without warning, leaving her paycheck unpaid. Each blow had stung, but each had built her. The pink rollers in her hair weren’t vanity Brooklyn they were ritual, a quiet declaration that she was preparing herself piece by piece.
