Cloudcroft, New Mexico, is truly a breath of fresh mountain air, offering a unique escape whether you're chasing snow or seeking cool summer solace. I recently discovered this charming village, nestled high in the Sacramento Mountains, and it's quickly become one of my favorite spots in the Southwest. If you're wondering what to do in Cloudcroft, NM, you're in for a treat! When I first started planning my trip, I was looking for a place that combined natural beauty with a cozy, small-town feel, and Cloudcroft delivered beyond my expectations. It's known for its stunning natural landscapes, especially its snowy winters. During my visit, the crisp air and snow-dusted pines made for some truly magical moments. We loved exploring the area, and I quickly realized why so many people flock here for a peaceful retreat. One of the absolute must-do things in Cloudcroft is to embrace the outdoors. If you visit in winter, like I did, you absolutely have to experience the snow. There are fantastic opportunities for sledding and snowshoeing right around the village, and for those who love more adrenaline, Ski Cloudcroft offers a great option for skiing and snowboarding. Even if you're not into winter sports, just taking a walk through the snowy forest is incredibly refreshing. The views from the various overlooks, particularly along the scenic Sunspot Highway, are absolutely breathtaking year-round. I found myself stopping every few minutes just to take in the panoramic vistas of the Tularosa Basin below. Beyond the snow, Cloudcroft offers a delightful village experience. I enjoyed strolling through the quaint downtown area, popping into the unique local shops and art galleries. You'll find everything from handmade crafts to delicious local treats. Don't miss out on trying some of the local eateries; I discovered a fantastic spot for a hot meal that was perfect after a day out in the cold. It’s the kind of place where you feel welcomed and can genuinely relax. For history buffs or those just curious about the area, the Sacramento Mountains Museum & Historical Society is a gem. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the logging and railroad history that shaped Cloudcroft. We also ventured onto a portion of the historic Cloudcroft Trestle Trail, which was once part of the famous Cloud Climbing Railroad. It’s a relatively easy walk and provides some incredible views, making it one of the best things to see in Cloudcroft NM. If you're traveling with family, there are also several parks and easy trails perfect for all ages, which was a big plus for us. Whether you're visiting for the cool mountain air in summer or the beautiful snow in winter, Cloudcroft, New Mexico, is an unforgettable destination. It's a place where you can truly unwind, connect with nature, and create lasting memories.
