For me, it’s a daily occurrence, and honestly, it warms my heart every single time. But beyond the sheer cuteness, I've often wondered – why do dogs truly love sitting on our laps so much? Through years of living with Sissy and observing her quirky habits, I’ve come to understand a few things about this adorable behavior. Another reason, which I've observed countless times, is pure attention-seeking. Dogs are incredibly intelligent creatures, and they quickly learn what gets our attention. For Sissy, a gentle nudge or a full-on leap onto my lap almost always results in pets, scratches, and sweet talk. It’s a guaranteed way to get me to put my phone down or pause what I’m doing and focus solely on her. And who can resist that face? Some people worry about dominance, suggesting that a dog sitting on your lap is trying to assert control. From my experience with Sissy, I completely disagree. She's the sweetest, most gentle dog, and her lap-sitting is never aggressive or demanding. It's always about comfort, closeness, and affection. If a dog is showing other signs of dominance, then maybe it's something to look into, but for most lap-loving pups like Sissy, it’s simply love. Let's not forget the simple pleasure of warmth. Especially during cooler evenings or lazy mornings, Sissy will burrow herself onto my lap, turning into a furry little heating pad. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement – she gets warm, and I get a cozy companion! I also believe it's a way for dogs to mark their territory, in a loving sense. By sitting on us, they're transferring their scent, essentially saying, 'This human is mine!' It strengthens the bond and creates a shared identity. It’s like a silent affirmation of our special relationship. Finally, sometimes Sissy just wants a better vantage point. My lap elevates her, giving her a clearer view of the room or what’s happening outside the window. It's her personal observation deck, allowing her to be part of the action without necessarily being in the thick of it. While I cherish every moment my Sissy spends on my lap, I also recognize that sometimes it might not be practical, especially if you have a larger dog or are trying to get things done. In those cases, I’ve found that gently redirecting her to a comfy dog bed right next to me, or offering a special chew toy, can work wonders. It’s all about finding that balance between indulging their need for closeness and maintaining your own space. Understanding why they do it only deepens our appreciation for these wonderful creatures.
