Brunch today was at Home Café. This old school greasiest of spoons diner is the most authentic and charming diner I've ever eaten at. Opened in the early 1930s and has remained constantly operating to today; always as Home Café. That like 90 years! They use real everything here. The coffee is strong & thick. The toast is buttered with real cow's butter. And the bacon is so thick. It is really like stepping back in time.
They only accept cash. And won't break big bills. The register is nestled by this fabulous vintage shelf covered in kitsch. Featured in this display are 2 period calendars, presumably actually from the year featured. One highlighting the day JFK was assassinated & the other highlighting MLK on the day of his. I love quirky old places that are of a bygone era & this place is everything in that genre.
Menues were soooo sticky! As were the salt & pepper shaker. It was authentic in every detail. Our waitress was sassy & full of character. Providing stellar service with a little humor & motherly tough love.
Josh got this special hand written on paper on the wall. It was 2 enchiladas served on fried potatoes & topped with 2 fried eggs. I think he may have achieved enlightenment while eating it. He actually said it was the best thing he has ever eaten! Lol
I got the classic 2 Egg & Bacon breakfast. I tried their cottage fries. Oh, and got a Blueberry Pancake. Everything was very good. Exactly what you'd expect from this kind of diner. And the prices were so affordable. You must give this place a try if you have not. And if you haven't been here in a while...it's time to make a visit. Next time I'm going to go at lunch & sit at the counter.
