ADHD ≠ LAZY

💭 Ever feel like everyone thinks you’re “lazy”? Or call yourself lazy in your head? If so.. SAME.

Here’s the thing: ADHD doesn’t make you lazy. It just makes some really normal stuff way harder than it should be. Like:

Staring at a sink full of dishes for 3 hours before finally doing them in 5 minutes 🫠

Forgetting laundry in the washer… for the third time this week

Needing a 25-minute pep talk just to send a 2-sentence email

People see that and think “lazy.” But what’s really happening is:

👉 Our brain is stuck in executive dysfunction mode

👉 Everything feels overwhelming at once

👉 We’ve been running on low-battery from masking all day

So no, you’re not lazy. You’re literally fighting your brain every day just to function. That’s not laziness, that’s Olympic-level energy. 🏅

Be kinder to yourself. You’re not behind, you’re not failing, you’re just wired differently. And still amazing ✨

... Read moreI remember countless times staring at a mountain of laundry, feeling utterly paralyzed. The thought of sorting, washing, drying, and folding felt like an impossible summit. My inner critic would immediately chime in, 'You're so lazy! Just do it!' But years later, after my ADHD diagnosis, I realized it wasn't laziness at all. It was my executive functions going on strike, a common experience for many, especially women with ADHD. So, what exactly is executive dysfunction? It's not just procrastination; it's a breakdown in the brain's 'managerial' system. Think of it as the air traffic control tower for your thoughts and actions. For someone with ADHD, this tower might be understaffed or have faulty equipment. It affects things like initiation (starting tasks), planning (breaking down tasks), working memory (keeping rules/steps in mind), and organization. That sink full of dishes isn't ignored because you don't want to do them; it's because the sequence of 'clear plates, rinse, load, add soap, start' feels like a monumental, multi-step project your brain struggles to initiate and manage. This often leads to overwhelming feelings. When every small task feels like a huge effort, your mental energy quickly depletes. And for many of us, especially if we've been masking our symptoms our whole lives – trying to appear 'normal' or 'on top of things' – this exhaustion is compounded. We spend so much energy overcompensating and hiding our struggles that by the end of the day, there’s simply nothing left in the tank. What looks like apathy to others is usually profound mental exhaustion from masking or overcompensating. The good news is, once we understand why we struggle, we can replace shame with practical strategies. This was a game-changer for me. Instead of battling myself, I learned to work with my brain. Here are a few things that have made a real difference: Breaking tasks into tiny steps: For that laundry mountain, I now just focus on 'put one item in the basket.' Then, 'take basket to machine.' Then, 'load machine.' Each tiny step is a win, building momentum without the overwhelm. Using timers: The 'body doubling' concept, or even just setting a 15-minute timer to tackle a dreaded task, can provide the necessary external structure. Knowing there’s an end in sight helps kickstart initiation. Setting up visual reminders: Out of sight, out of mind is real for us! Post-it notes by the door for keys, a clearly labeled charging station, or even just leaving the laundry basket in sight (but not in the way) reminds me to tackle it. Giving ourselves permission to rest: This is crucial. Our brains are working overtime. True rest isn’t laziness; it’s recharging. Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is take a genuine break without guilt. Remember, you're navigating a brain that works differently, which takes extra energy. It's a journey of self-discovery and self-compassion. You are not lazy; you are wired differently, and that's okay. Understanding executive dysfunction helped me reframe my struggles and develop coping mechanisms that actually work for my brain. Be kind to yourself, celebrate small victories, and remember that your energy expenditure is Olympic-level even for 'simple' tasks. You're doing incredible work just by navigating your day.
