It’s my first day of law school!

This week has been a challenge! I’m so grateful to be starting my law school journey but it’s very overwhelming. I look forward to posting more as a find my routine this semester.

Do you want to see law school content from me, or should I stick to what I’ve already been posting?

... Read moreThat first day of law school is truly a whirlwind, isn't it? I totally get that 'overwhelmed but grateful' feeling. I remember my own first day – walking into that big university building, backpack heavy, feeling a mix of sheer excitement and absolute terror for the academic journey ahead. It’s a monumental step, and it’s completely normal to feel like you’ve been dropped into the deep end. For anyone else just starting their law school experience, or even those thinking about it, here are a few things I've already realized or wished I'd known coming into this intensive first week. Firstly, the sheer volume of reading is no joke! Don't feel pressured to understand every single word or case on your first pass. It’s more about grasping the main concepts and identifying the issues. Many upper-year students told me early on that learning how to read efficiently is a skill in itself, and it definitely takes practice. Secondly, try to establish a routine as quickly as possible. Whether it’s waking up at a certain time, scheduling study blocks, or even just setting aside an hour for a workout or a walk, consistency can be a game-changer. I’m already trying to map out my week to include not just classes and study time, but also moments to decompress. Self-care isn't a luxury in law school; it's a necessity to prevent burnout during this demanding academic journey. Connecting with your classmates is also super important. Even though you might feel like everyone else has it all figured out (trust me, they don't!), forming study groups or just having people to debrief with can make a huge difference. We're all in this together, and sharing notes, questions, or just a laugh about how confusing a concept is, can be incredibly validating. I’m hoping to find a good study group soon to help tackle these challenging new subjects. Finally, remember why you started this journey. When the imposter syndrome creeps in (and it will!), or when you feel completely swamped, take a moment to reflect on your motivations. The path to becoming an attorney is tough, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. I'm still just on my first day, but I'm already seeing the value in pushing through the discomfort. I'm excited to see where this academic adventure takes me and I’m ready to embrace all the learning and growth that comes with it. What are your best tips for surviving the first semester?
