Fantasy Terrariums
I call these Fantasy Terrariums because aside from cats and dogs, I also have dragons, fairies, and wild animals to do. For the more common animals, I try to make the scenes around them feel whimsical or fantastic. For this little cat sitting on a wall, I was going for a Studio Ghibli sort of feel and I think I achieved it!
Creating a fantasy terrarium is one of my absolute favorite ways to bring a touch of magic into my home, and I love sharing my personal journey with it! It's more than just planting; it's about crafting a tiny story under glass. For me, the inspiration often comes from whimsical scenes, much like the Studio Ghibli aesthetic that influenced my cat terrarium. But the beauty is, you can make your own unique fantasy world. First things first, gathering your supplies is part of the adventure. You'll need a clear glass bowl or container, some drainage material (like small pebbles or activated charcoal), terrarium-specific soil, and of course, your miniature elements. For a truly whimsical scene, I recommend hunting for tiny figurines – whether it's a cute cat figurine, a mysterious dragon, a graceful fairy, or even tiny wild animals. These are the stars of your miniature world! Next, consider your plant palette. Moss is a must-have for that lush, natural feel. There are so many types, from vibrant green sheet moss to fluffy cushion moss, all perfect for creating a soft, inviting landscape. When I was thinking about my cat's mossy spot, I pictured a gentle, rolling hill, and different textures of moss really helped achieve that. You can also add miniature green, yellow, and white foliage plants that thrive in humid environments. Look for varieties with small leaves and interesting shapes to add depth without overpowering the scene. Now, for those 'grassland terrarium' vibes that many of you might be curious about! While my current one leans more forest-y, I've experimented with grassland themes too. For this, focus on open spaces and low-growing plants. Instead of dense foliage, think about using different shades and textures of moss to mimic fields of grass. You can also incorporate tiny, delicate ground cover plants that fan out, creating the illusion of a vast, miniature meadow. Small, smooth pebbles can represent winding paths or dried riverbeds, and a tiny figurine of a deer or a rabbit would perfectly complement this natural, expansive look. Imagine adding a decorative white flower or some miniature berries strategically placed to draw the eye, just like you'd find in a real meadow. My personal tip for achieving that enchanting, whimsical scene is to think about composition. Don't just plop things down! Create focal points, pathways, and varying heights. I often start by placing my main figurine, like my cat, and then build the landscape around it, ensuring everything looks natural and harmonious. The goal is to make it feel like a tiny living world you could step right into. Maintaining your fantasy terrarium is relatively simple; indirect light and occasional misting are usually all it needs to keep thriving. It’s a truly rewarding craft, and I encourage you all to try bringing your own tiny, magical landscapes to life!
