Which Keyboard Switch Is Best FOR YOU? 🤔
Wanna know how you can choose the right switches for your typing style/purpose?
Well, it all begins with KNOWING the nuances of what makes up a switch.
There's 3 basic things to know and keep in mind when choosing what you prefer.
Those 3 things are:
OPERATING FORCE (aka Actuation), PRE-TRAVEL DISTANCE, AND (total) TRAVEL DISTANCE.
⚙️ Operating Force / Actuation Force – The amount of force (measured in grams) needed to press a key and activate the switch. Lighter switches require less effort, while heavier ones provide more resistance.
⬇️ Pre-Travel Distance – The distance a key needs to be pressed before it registers an input. Shorter pre-travel distances lead to faster actuation, while longer ones provide more deliberate keypresses.
↕️ Total Travel Distance – The full distance a key moves when pressed all the way down. Some people prefer shorter travel for quick typing, while others enjoy deeper key presses for a more satisfying feel.
Some of these specs have more favourability depends on the purpose. Someone who works in an office might prefer a switch with a low travel distance as they tend to be quieter. A solo WFH typer may prefer a switch with more travel distance as this makes for a more satisfying sound, especially paired with a Clicky or Tactile switch.
Another good example is a writer or typist. They may prefer a short travel distance, with less pre-travel and faster actuation to help keep the speed of their typing up (especially if words per minute count!)
A gamer may prefer a linear switch with light actuation and a small pre-travel, especially when playing a game where miliseconds count over clicky switches that can be off putting and distracting when focusing on a game.
A programmer may prefer tactile switches with more actuation force (for more precision) and feedback over linear switches which give little feedback and require less pressure, which could mean accidental typing which isn't ideal when hitting the right keys is important for someone who types all day.
I hope this helps you understand the nuances of keyboard switches and maybe helps you figure out which one is more suited to you!
