Protect Native Trans Kids

Happy Native Heritage month, a time to learn from, support, and uplift Indigenous Peoples ✨

It’s also a much needed time to protect, center, and cherish our Indigenous Trans Relatives.

This image is of Canyon De Chelly, which once protected my ancestors from Spanish conquistadors and later, the U.S. Military.

I ask and hope that its presence protects our Trans Relatives in this tumultuous time 💛

Note:

Not every Indigenous Trans person is Two-Spirit and not every Two-Spirit Relative is Trans.

Please do not conflate the two.

... Read moreDuring Native Heritage Month, my heart feels especially full, not just with celebration, but with a deep sense of purpose to uplift and protect our Indigenous Trans and Two-Spirit relatives. It’s a time for all of us to truly listen and learn from Indigenous Peoples, recognizing the unique challenges and incredible resilience within their communities. For me, this month is a powerful reminder that while we cherish our heritage, we also have a responsibility to actively safeguard the most vulnerable among us. The call to 'PROTECT NATIVE TRANS KIDS' isn't just a slogan; it's a vital plea for support and understanding. Our Indigenous Trans and Two-Spirit relatives often face layers of discrimination – not only for their gender identity but also due to historical trauma, systemic racism, and the ongoing attempts to erase Indigenous cultures. It’s a heartbreaking reality, but also a call to action. I truly believe that by centering their voices and experiences, we can begin to build more inclusive and supportive spaces. Understanding the term 'Two-Spirit' is also crucial, and I appreciate the distinction made in the original post. It’s a beautiful, culturally specific term used by some Indigenous North American communities to describe individuals who embody both masculine and feminine spirits. This identity is often tied to traditional roles and spiritual significance within their cultures, predating Western concepts of gender and sexuality. It's not interchangeable with being transgender, though some Two-Spirit people may also identify as trans. Respecting this nuance means acknowledging the rich diversity within Indigenous gender identities and moving beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. For me, it’s about honoring their unique paths and wisdom. When I think about the strength and protection our ancestors found, my mind often goes to places like Canyon De Chelly. Looking at images of its majestic red rock cliffs, the winding river carving through ancient lands, and the vibrant yellow and green trees under a vast blue sky, I feel a profound connection to resilience. These sacred spaces once offered refuge from invaders, and today, they stand as enduring symbols of survival and strength. It reminds me that we, too, must create spaces of sanctuary for our present-day relatives, especially our young Indigenous Trans and Two-Spirit kin. It’s about ensuring they have the safety and resources to thrive, just as those lands once protected generations. So, what can we do? For me, it starts with active listening and learning. Seek out and amplify the voices of Indigenous Trans and Two-Spirit leaders and organizations. Educate yourself on the specific issues affecting these communities, from healthcare access to anti-trans legislation. Support Indigenous-led initiatives that provide direct services and advocacy. It's about showing up, not just during Native Heritage Month, but every single day, with genuine solidarity and a commitment to creating a world where every Indigenous Trans and Two-Spirit person feels loved, safe, and truly seen.

An illustration shows a mother in a purple suit holding her daughter's hand, walking away from a group of four children who appear to be arguing in a park. The daughter looks back at the other children. Text overlay advocates for keeping kids away from poorly parented children to teach respect, empathy, and boundaries.
It’s okay to protect your child’s peace 💜
Normalize setting boundaries for your kids, too. If another child isn’t being taught respect, empathy, or boundaries, it’s not rude to step back. It’s responsible. 💬 Not every environment is safe for your child’s heart or mind. You’re not judging, you’re parenting. 💜 #momwisdom #gentleparent
