everything I did in Beijing (pt 1) ~

Visiting Beijing offers an incredible blend of rich history, modern culture, and delicious cuisine, and my experience on the first day truly captured that essence. Arriving at Beijing Capital International Airport’s Terminal 3, I started my culinary journey right at the airport with a bowl of beef noodles from Yu Jian Xiao Mian. The noodles had a perfect QQ texture—slightly chewy and springy—paired with a comforting broth and crisp vegetables, making it an ideal meal after a long flight. A bonus was the free self-service water, which is a thoughtful touch. One of the landmarks I explored was the Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum. The craftsmanship, especially the intricate caisson ceilings in Longfu Temple, was breathtaking. While most exhibit descriptions were in Chinese, requiring some Google Translate help, the visual beauty was more than enough to appreciate. This experience deepened my admiration for Beijing’s architectural heritage and the meticulous preservation efforts. Next, I wandered through the 798 Art Centre, an area transforming old factories into galleries, boutiques, and cafes. The vibe here is artsy and vibrant, making it perfect for finding unique souvenirs or simply soaking up local creativity. I especially enjoyed the floral ambiance of Huajian Taste, a dessert café nearby—don’t miss their souffle pancakes which are fluffy and delightful. For shopping and nightlife, Sanlitun Taikoo Li is the place to be. With flagship stores of global brands and sleek modern designs, it’s a fashionista’s dream. I also had a memorable solo dining experience at 23 Seats, a noodle bar near Sanlitun, reminiscent of Japan’s Ichiran Ramen. The hearty noodles served generous portions and provided a cozy dining atmosphere. Lastly, staying near Qianmen Street introduced me to local delicacies like lamb skewers from Donglaishun and thick milk skin yogurt—both must-tries for anyone wanting to taste authentic Beijing flavors. The street is bustling with shops and eateries, giving a genuine feel of the city’s vibrant everyday life. Overall, my day 1 in Beijing was a fantastic mix of historic sites, modern art, and mouth-watering food. For fellow travelers, I recommend pacing your day to thoroughly enjoy each spot and making sure to try local favorites along the way. Whether it’s the artistic charm of 798 or the lively shopping scene at Sanlitun, Beijing offers endless surprises that make every moment memorable.
