Dando sandia a las gallinas
As a backyard chicken keeper, I'm always looking for ways to treat my flock while also ensuring they get all the nutrients they need. And let me tell you, when I first started giving watermelon to my chickens, it was an instant hit! They absolutely adore this sweet, refreshing fruit. It's truly a joy watching them peck away at a big slice on a hot summer day. But beyond being a fun treat, a common question I get is, 'Is watermelon actually good for chickens?' From my experience, yes, in moderation, it's fantastic! Watermelon is packed with water, making it an excellent source of hydration, which is crucial, especially during those scorching months. It also contains vitamins A and C, and various antioxidants, all of which contribute to a healthy immune system and overall well-being for your feathered friends. When it comes to giving watermelon to eat to my chickens, I usually just cut it into large chunks or even halves and let them go to town. Don't worry about the rind – it's perfectly safe for them and provides extra fiber. My hens love to peck at the green outer layer too! As for the seeds, while some people prefer to remove them, I've found that in moderation, the small seeds don't pose a problem for chickens and are easily digested. Just avoid giving them excessive amounts of seeds. I always make sure to put the watermelon in a clean, accessible spot in their run, ideally on a tray or directly on the grass, to keep things tidy. It can get a little messy, but that's part of the fun! It's a fantastic way to keep them entertained and provide a stimulating activity. Just remember that watermelon is a treat, not a meal replacement. I typically offer it a few times a week during the summer, ensuring it complements their regular feed, not replaces it. Beyond watermelon, I also love to spoil my laying hens with other garden goodies. They enjoy small amounts of berries, leafy greens like kale and spinach (chopped up), and even occasional corn on the cob. It's all about variety and making sure these treats are fresh, clean, and given in moderation. Seeing my girls happy and healthy, especially when they're enjoying a juicy piece of watermelon, makes all the effort worthwhile!
