INTERRACIAL DATING: My Experience as a black woman

My partner is Filipino and I am black & Choctaw 🖤 We have been dating for 7 months but we have been friends for 3 years. ✨ This is his first time dating a black woman and all my past partners have been outside of my race.

Being with my partner has been so eye opening, fun and we have both learned so much about each other. I grew up in San Diego & the majority of my friends were Filipino & I even have a tita! ☀️ although I am pretty familiar with the culture -dating is completely different.

Here are some notes from my experience on how to cultivate a healthy relationship 🫧🤍

* Like ANY relationship, communication is important. Although he is Filipino American, there are still cultural norms & conversations we both educate each other on and being patient and understanding is important. Knowing the history of each others culture as well as the “why” behind things prevents miscommunication and we both feel fulfilled with knowledge.

* Fun fact: he knows what a 613 is 😋💀

* BE OPEN! The key to making an interracial relationship work is being open to new things! Whether it is trying unique foods or events such a Juneteenth party or simply meeting their family. My partner’s family have been so accepting & I love them so much. They truly treat me like I am their daughter and I love them so much.

* Prejudices and Micro-aggressions from outsiders.

There are times where we will go out and me or him will experience stares, comments, or flat out rude people - having a partner who validates my experience and makes me feel heard, comforts me when I feel bruised, and speaks up for me is so important. In an interracial relationship you will experience these things, it is so important to have conversations about this and to be sure to understand each other and what each other may experience.

* Regardless of strangers, some people close to you may not be entirely fond of you dating interracially. In my experience, I put some distance between those friendships/relationships because my partner and I are a unit, if the way are not accepting of my partner in any way- they are in my way and need to go. We do not tolerate prejudice 🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️

Lastly, have fun. I have felt like a princess ☺️ every day with my partner. He’s always communicative, helpful, supporting, kind, gentle, and overall amazing.

If you have any questions lmk 🥰🥰
