Why are we scared of planes?

... Read moreFear of flying, or aviophobia, affects a significant portion of the population. Despite studies showing that planes are far safer than cars, people often experience heightened anxiety before flying. This fear can stem from various factors including a lack of control, claustrophobia, or previous traumatic experiences. Interestingly, media portrayal of airplane incidents can exacerbate these fears, influencing public perception. The serenity of the flying experience is often overshadowed by dramatic airline accident stories, making individuals more inclined to focus on the risks rather than the safety record of commercial aviation. Understanding these behavioral patterns can assist potential flyers in acknowledging their fears and seeking effective coping strategies, such as exposure therapy or mindfulness techniques, to alleviate anxiety when it comes to air travel.

I used to be super nervous about getting on a plane because of fearing something might go wrong or it'll crash down. Now it's not that much on my mind but I still get a bit anxious thinking about it. I'm not sure why but traveling by car or transportation feels safer to me.

People fear planes due to lack of control, fear of heights, turbulence, past crashes, claustrophobia, and media portrayal of accidents.
