Okay, so you saw my initial post about the incredible Japanese packaged treats I spotted at Safeway, and I know you're curious! I wanted to dive a little deeper into what exactly you can expect to find and why this discovery is such a game-changer for anyone craving authentic Japanese snacks without breaking the bank. First off, let's talk about the sheer variety! It's not just one or two items; my Safeway had a whole section dedicated to these imported goodies. I saw an amazing array of packaged Japanese rice cakes (mochi/daifuku) in various fruit flavors. If you've never tried mochi, you're in for a treat – these chewy, subtly sweet rice cakes are a staple. The "various flavored rice cakes" looked absolutely divine, perfect for a quick, unique dessert. Then there were the dorayaki, those classic Japanese pancakes filled with sweet red bean or chestnut paste. They looked so soft and inviting, a perfect little indulgence. And for those who love a creamier treat, I spotted several kinds of Swiss roll cakes, including one specifically labeled "Swiss Roll Milky Cream" – described as soft and creamy with milky flavored cream. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! But the real showstoppers for me were the cheesecakes. I saw Koriyama's Deliciously Light Cheese Cake, which the packaging promised was a "fabulous cake that melts in your mouth" and "ACTUALLY cheese flavored." How exciting is that? There was also a "cheesecake bread" by Koriyama's, which sounds like an incredible fusion. Another brand, Orange, offered a "Baked Cheesecake" that I know would satisfy any cheesecake craving. Beyond these, I also noticed Orange's Vanilla Milk Cream Waffles, proudly boasting Hokkaido cream – you know that means quality! And for something a bit more sophisticated, their "Mille-crepe Vanilla" was described as a "vanilla-orange-esc treat" and "super cool layered." So, what should you look for when you're there? Check the labels: Many of these come from reputable Japanese brands like Koriyama's and Orange, known for their quality. Price point: As I mentioned, these are generally in the $2-$6 range, which is fantastic value compared to specialty Asian supermarkets where you might pay triple. Even the larger "cheesecake bread" was priced around $9.49, still reasonable for its size. Freshness: Always check the expiration dates! Even though they're packaged, you want to enjoy them at their best. Serving suggestions: Many of these are best enjoyed chilled, especially the mochi and cream-filled items. Pair them with a cup of green tea or coffee for an authentic snack experience. My personal experience? Walking through Safeway and stumbling upon this treasure trove felt like hitting the jackpot. It's a fantastic way to explore new flavors and enjoy high-quality Japanese sweets without making a special trip. If you're looking for an easy and affordable way to try authentic packaged cakes and treats, definitely check your local supermarket for these hidden gems. Let me know if you find any!
