Intuition vs Anxiety
Not every gut feeling is intuition.
Some of it is anxiety trying to protect you by overthinking everything.
The key is learning how each one feels — calm vs chaotic.
From my own experience, learning to differentiate between intuition and anxiety has been a game changer in making better decisions and maintaining emotional balance. Intuition often comes as a calm, clear message—usually short and direct—that feels grounded and steady. It's like an inner knowing that doesn't need to be overthought. For example, when I faced an important choice, my intuition simply presented a quiet certainty that felt right in my body, without triggering panic or restlessness. On the other hand, anxiety tends to create loud, racing thoughts filled with "what if" scenarios. It feels chaotic and urgent, with repeated loops of worry. I've noticed that anxiety makes my chest tight and my mind restless, pushing me to overanalyze every detail, which only clouds my judgment. One helpful test I use is to ask myself: "Is this feeling calm or chaotic?" and "Is it guiding me or scaring me?" This approach helped me catch when I was acting out of fear rather than clarity. Timing also matters; intuition often shows up once or twice and then is quiet, while anxiety tends to loop constantly. For anyone struggling with distinguishing these emotions, mindfulness and self-awareness practices can enhance your ability to tune into your body’s responses and recognize these subtle differences. Journaling my feelings and physical sensations when a gut feeling arises also provided insight into whether it's my intuition or anxiety speaking. Ultimately, knowing the difference between intuition and anxiety empowers us to trust ourselves more and make decisions that align with our true well-being.
