How to Tell When the Energy Isn't Yours

One of the biggest lessons for sensitive people is learning the difference between feeling something and owning something.

Not every mood, emotion, or energetic shift starts with you.

The more aware you become, the easier it gets to recognize what belongs to you and what doesn't.

... Read moreAs someone who identifies as a highly sensitive person, I’ve often struggled with understanding when an emotion truly belongs to me versus when I’m picking up on someone else’s energy. One thing I’ve learned is to always check in with myself before and after interactions to assess any sudden emotional changes. For example, if I enter a room feeling calm but leave feeling anxious or drained, it’s often a sign that I’ve absorbed someone else’s energy. This experience aligns with the advice to ask, "What was I feeling BEFORE I entered this situation?" and to notice if the mood shift seems sudden or unprovoked. Physical sensations are another crucial clue. Sometimes, my body reacts before my mind does — I might feel heaviness in my chest, tension in my shoulders, or mental fog. Paying attention to these bodily signals has helped me develop stronger energetic boundaries. Also, observing the people and environments that trigger these sensations is essential. I’ve noticed that certain individuals or places consistently affect my energy levels. Recognizing these patterns has empowered me to prepare myself or limit exposure to protect my mental and emotional well-being. What has truly helped me is distinguishing empathy from absorption. True empathy involves caring about others’ feelings without internalizing their emotional burdens. By asking myself, "Does this actually belong to me?" before taking on any strong feeling, I avoid unnecessary emotional overload. Building this energetic awareness has been transformative. It not only improves my mental health but also deepens my spiritual growth. For those on a similar path, exploring resources on intuition, energetic boundaries, and spiritual awareness can provide valuable tools to strengthen this practice.
