A lot of people wonder where their self-critical inner voice came from…
But when you grow up with hypercritical parents who constantly nitpicked, corrected, or shamed you for not doing something “right,” that voice doesn’t just disappear when you become an adult.
It becomes internalized.
It turns into the voice you hear now—the one that tells you you’re not enough, you’re doing it wrong, or you should “be better.”
Last night on my live, I reminded my collective of something so important:
✨ You can change that voice.
You can become the safe, patient, loving voice your inner child never had.
You are allowed to talk to yourself with gentleness.
You are allowed to unlearn the criticism that was taught to you.
You are allowed to rewrite the narrative inside your own mind.
... Read moreMany people struggle with a harsh inner critic that echoes the words they heard from hypercritical parents during childhood. This internalized voice often tells us, "You're not good enough," or "You always mess everything up," creating feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. Yet, it's important to recognize that this voice is not fixed or inevitable.
You can actively change which voice you listen to—the critical one or the kind, supportive voice your inner child deserves. This requires patience and self-compassion. By deliberately replacing negative self-talk with affirmations such as "I'm proud of you," "You're doing your best," and "It's okay to make mistakes," you create a safer mental space that nurtures healing.
Inner child healing is a valuable process where you reconnect with the vulnerable part of yourself that still hears these critical messages. By addressing these messages with gentleness, you rewrite the story inside your mind. Techniques such as journaling, guided meditation, or therapy can help in unlearning destructive beliefs and cultivating a nurturing voice.
Mental health awareness emphasizes the impact of our internal dialogue on emotional well-being. When we allow ourselves to talk with kindness, we build resilience against anxiety and depression. The voice you choose to listen to profoundly shapes your confidence and overall happiness.
Remember, changing this inner conversation doesn’t happen overnight. Consistent daily practice of speaking kindly to yourself and affirming your worth breaks the cycle of criticism taught in childhood. Your inner child is listening; give her the words she always needed to hear. Choosing the kind voice over the critical one empowers you to live with greater peace, self-acceptance, and healing.
