Using a double batch of dough is a great way to enjoy both bagels and bread from the same recipe, maximizing your effort in one go. The key to achieving that classic bagel texture is boiling the dough briefly before baking. Boiling the shaped bagels in water with honey not only adds a subtle sweetness but also helps create a shiny and chewy crust. Boiling for about 1-2 minutes on each side ensures the bagels hold their shape and develop the ideal crust. When choosing oils, vegetable, canola, or avocado oil all work well, contributing slight variations in flavor and health benefits. Sea salt and sugar balance the dough's flavor, while instant yeast offers a quick rise—about an hour at room temperature allows the dough to become light and airy before shaping. After boiling, feel free to get creative with toppings. Classic options like sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or everything bagel seasoning add a savory touch, while sweet options such as cinnamon sugar can transform your bagels into a dessert-worthy treat. Baking at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes until browned is perfect for a crisp outside with a soft, chewy interior. Letting the bagels cool briefly before slicing will help maintain their structure. Experimenting with this homemade bagel approach lets you tailor the recipe to your taste preferences and dietary needs, making your breakfast or brunch truly special and homemade deliciousness easily accessible.
