Why do so many people think they have #CCI?
Why do so many people think they have #CCI (cranio-cervical instability) and that injections in their neck are the cure?
(Disclaimer: CCI is a real condition and the injections certainly can be helpful. My concern is the amount of people told they have CCI without the risk factors or imaging to confirm it)
I've noticed in my personal interactions with patients and online communities that many people confuse symptoms like dizziness, headaches, and neck stiffness with cranio-cervical instability (CCI). From my experience, a major factor contributing to this misunderstanding is the widespread marketing by certain medical clinics promoting prolotherapy injections as a cure for CCI—even when proper clinical testing and imaging haven't confirmed the diagnosis. Prolotherapy involves injecting a sugar solution, usually dextrose, near joints to trigger a healing inflammatory response. While it can be beneficial for some joint issues, CCI is a complex instability involving the upper neck ligaments often requiring more precise diagnosis. Real CCI cases typically involve risk factors such as connective tissue disorders like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or significant trauma, which many patients simply do not have. In practice, what often presents with similar symptoms is a misalignment of the upper cervical vertebrae, which affects nerve function and blood flow more than actual instability. Such misalignments are more common and usually easier to treat with chiropractic care, physical therapy, or targeted manual adjustments. If you suspect neck instability, it's crucial to receive thorough clinical evaluation including imaging like MRI or flexion-extension x-rays, and not rely solely on virtual consultations or online information. Self-diagnosing based on symptoms alone may lead to unnecessary treatments. Additionally, it's important to ask critical questions about any recommended therapies. For example, if being offered injections, inquire about the mechanism, expected benefits, risks, and supporting evidence for your specific condition. Many treatments marketed as revolutionary injections may in fact resemble simpler inflammatory approaches similar to massage or heat therapy. From my experience, education is key. Patients benefit from understanding that chronic neck symptoms can stem from multiple causes—not always CCI. Ensuring accurate diagnosis prevents unnecessary invasive treatments and steers you toward safer, more effective care options. If you’re experiencing dizziness, brain fog, or neck stiffness, discussing these symptoms with a specialist familiar with cervical spine disorders is advisable, as they can help differentiate instability from alignment issues. Ultimately, maintaining neck health through proper ergonomics, gentle exercises, and avoiding high-risk activities may reduce symptom recurrence. Don't hesitate to ask your healthcare provider for comprehensive testing and a clear explanation of your diagnosis before committing to any invasive treatments.
