Strange festivals in Okayama Prefecture
Hanzaki Festival is a summer tradition held every year on August 7 (eve festival) and August 8 (main festival) at Yubara Onsen in Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture. It is a strange festival with the theme of giant salamander (Hanzaki) which is a special natural monument of the country, and the hot spring town is dyed in Hanzaki color.
- Eve Festival (August 7): Mainly events for children (games, food stalls, raffle, kids dance, etc.). It starts at 18: 00 every year and starts in a lively atmosphere.
- Main Festival (August 8): Hanzaki floats (Taro and Hanako), Dochubayashi, and the golden "Hanzaki Nebuta" parade through the hot spring town. Karaoke competitions and stage performances (saxophone performances, comedy live performances, etc.) are held in the festival square, and fireworks are launched at night.
はんざき祭りは、オオサンショウウオ（地域では「はんざき」と呼ばれる）を称える特別な祭りで、夏の真庭市湯原温泉の風物詩です。私も何度か訪れましたが、子どもから大人まで幅広い世代が楽しめる工夫が満載で、特に前夜祭の屋台やキッズダンスは活気にあふれていました。 本祭では「はんざき山車」が温泉街を巡り、太郎・花子の山車が登場し色鮮やかなねぶたを間近で楽しめるのが見どころ。祭りの音楽を奏でる藤田伝三郎太鼓や、道中ばやしの賑やかさに心が躍ります。また、カラオケ大会やサックス演奏のステージパフォーマンスも多彩で飽きさせません。 夜には温泉街の上空に打ち上げられる花火も圧巻で、夏の夜空を彩る美しい光景が訪れる人々の思い出になります。祭りを楽しむ合間には、はんざきセンターでオオサンショウウオの生態について学べるため、子ども連れでも楽しめて一層深みのある体験となりました。 この祭りは、岡山県の自然と歴史が息づく「日本三大奇祭」の一つとも言われ、地域の文化継承にも重要な役割を果たしています。特別天然記念物のはんざきを通じて、真庭市の持つ豊かな自然と伝統を肌で感じられる貴重な機会です。ぜひ、湯原温泉街の情緒ある雰囲気と共に訪れてみてください。
