Okay, so I've been seeing the #massfollowing trend all over Lemon8 and other platforms, and like many of you, I had the burning question: DOES THIS WORK OR NOOOT? I dive deep into trends, especially if they promise growth, so I decided to give it a shot. First off, what exactly is 'mass following'? Simply put, it's a strategy where you follow a large number of accounts in a short period, often hoping that a percentage of them will follow you back. The idea is that more followers will see your profile, and some will stick around. It sounds simple, right? A quick way to boost those numbers! I heard about it from a few creators and thought, 'Why not try?' My initial thought was: 'MASS FOLLOW LETS GOOO' – a real enthusiasm for a quick win. My personal experience started with a lot of excitement. I spent a good chunk of time following accounts that seemed relevant to my niche, and for a very brief period, I did see a small uptick in my follower count. It felt like I was finally making progress! But then, reality started to set in. While some accounts did follow back, many didn't. And of those who did, the engagement on my actual posts didn't really improve. My likes and comments stayed pretty much the same, and sometimes even felt like they were declining relative to my new follower count. It felt a bit hollow, to be honest. It made me question the meaning of these new followers. Were they genuinely interested in my content, or just following back out of politeness or hoping I'd follow them indefinitely? What I quickly realized is that while mass following can give you a numerical bump, it often leads to a low-quality audience. You might gain followers who aren't interested in your niche, who are inactive, or who are just playing the same follow/unfollow game. This can actually hurt your account in the long run. Platforms like Lemon8 and others prioritize genuine engagement. If you have a large follower count but very low engagement, the algorithm might see your content as less valuable, reducing its reach even to the followers you do have. Plus, constantly following and unfollowing can sometimes lead to your account being flagged or facing temporary restrictions by the platform. That’s definitely not something any of us want! So, after my experiment, my conclusion to 'does this work' is: not for sustainable, meaningful growth. While the lure of quick numbers is strong, I've found that focusing on building a genuine community is far more rewarding. Instead of mass following, I'm now concentrating on creating high-quality, engaging content that truly resonates with my ideal audience. I'm also spending more time engaging authentically with other creators and their posts, leaving thoughtful comments, and participating in relevant communities. This might be a slower path, but the followers you gain this way are more likely to be loyal, engaged, and genuinely interested in what you have to share. They are the ones who will truly interact with your posts and help your content get seen. It's about quality over quantity, every single time!
