You know how cats sometimes stick out their little tongues, just a tiny bit? That's what we affectionately call 'blepping'! My sweet rescue cat, Josie, is a master of the blep, and it's truly one of her most endearing quirks. When I first adopted her six years ago, I noticed her doing it quite a bit, and I used to wonder, 'Why does she do that?' It’s so funny and adorable, especially when she’s really focused on something or just waking up from a nap. I've learned a lot about this cute feline habit since Josie came into my life. Mostly, blepping is totally normal and harmless! It usually happens when cats are super relaxed, maybe grooming themselves and just forget to pull their tongue back in all the way. Or sometimes, if they're really concentrating on a new smell – you might see them make a funny face with their mouth slightly open and tongue out. This is actually called the Flehmen response, and it helps them get a better whiff of interesting scents, almost like they're "tasting" the air. It's fascinating to watch! For Josie, I've noticed her most epic bleps happen after a good stretch or when she's in a deep, peaceful sleep and then slowly starts to stir. Her little tongue will just peek out, and it makes my heart melt every single time. It's moments like these that remind me how much joy she brings into my home. Occasionally, she'll blep while she's having a serious case of the zoomies, which is just pure comedy – a blur of fur and a tiny pink tongue! While blepping is typically a sign of a happy, comfortable cat, it's always good to be aware of your cat's normal behavior. If you notice your cat blepping excessively, drooling, or showing any signs of discomfort around their mouth, it might be worth a quick check-up with your vet, just to rule out any dental issues or other health concerns. But for most cats, like my Josie, it's just a charming, silly habit that adds to their unique personality. So next time you see your furry friend (or a friend's cat!) doing a little blep, take a moment to appreciate it. It's often a sign of a content kitty, completely at ease in their environment. And trust me, once you start noticing it, you'll see those adorable little bleps everywhere! It’s just one of the many little joys of having a cat, especially a lovable rescue like my Josie.
