🎬 Life in Films | Movies That Once Saved Me

There are still those little moments in life — the ones that quietly remind you,

“Hey, life’s actually kind of beautiful.”

Like biking to buy flowers and fresh bread.

Like the first bite of chilled watermelon on a summer afternoon.

Like catching the sunset by surprise on your way home.

Like cracking open a beer, grabbing chips, turning off the lights — and pressing play.

Here are a few films I’ve rewatched countless times. They’ve comforted me through different stages of life — just like those quiet, golden moments we never forget.

🎬 《My Afternoons with Margueritte》

A film like afternoon sunlight — soft enough to melt everything frozen.

It’s about how books help us discover love, and how love helps us find books.

Germain, a lonely middle-aged man, meets 95-year-old Margueritte, who loves to read.

They sit on a bench in the sun, sharing stories, feeding pigeons, reading aloud —

and gradually, healing each other in both directions.

My favorite scene:

Germain asks, “What if a mother doesn’t love her child?” Margueritte answers gently,

“Then everything that child missed is still out there, waiting to be discovered.”

🎬 《Still Walking》

One dinner table. A silent, stubborn father.

A mother grieving a lost son.

And a younger son longing to be seen.

Everyone sits close — yet no one can truly relax.

This is Hirokazu Kore-eda at his best: subtle, sharp, and deeply human.

Like a wide-aperture camera lens, softening everything just enough —only to make the pain even clearer.

You’ll understand family a little more.

The guilt, the distance, the unspoken sadness that lives in between.

“We walk through life, never stopping — but always a beat too late.”

🎬 Paterson

A film I turn to whenever I feel creatively drained.

Paterson is a bus driver, living in a town that shares his name.

Every day, he drives the same route, lives a simple routine.

But in his quiet mind, he writes poetry — finding beauty in every corner of the ordinary.

The moving streets are “a rush of billions of molecules.”

Even the matchsticks at breakfast hold “a tragic, ecstatic grandeur.”

He’s a poet of the spirit, yet never bitter or detached from reality.

He loves his partner, cuddles his dog, embraces the mundane —

and imagines the magical.

Whenever I’m anxious about writing, I remind myself:

Be like Paterson. Stay open. Feel. Write for yourself. For life.

🎬 Heidi

I rewatch this every year — like stepping into a storybook.

It opens up both my eyes and heart again.

The innocent, wild-hearted Heidi.

The quiet, weathered grandfather.

No heavy conflict. No forced drama.

Just simple, complete beauty from beginning to end.

The friendship, the love, the soul-level comfort of it all.And the Swiss Alps — oil-painting-level stunning.

Lately, I’ve said no to more work than usual,

went home, reconnected with people I missed.

For the rest of the year, I want to do the same:

feel fully, live gently.
