Find the bunny rabbit!

From my experience caring for a parent with dementia, I noticed similar behaviors where everyday objects like cotton candy, bunny ears, toys, and Easter eggs become incredibly important to them. They often collect and hide these items, sometimes tucking them away safely in pockets. It felt unusual at first, but I realized this behavior can be a way for them to create comfort or preserve precious memories. It's essential to watch belongings carefully because items can easily get lost or misplaced, which can cause frustration for both the caregiver and the person with dementia. Creating designated spaces for these favorite objects can help reduce anxiety and confusion. For example, having a special basket or small container for Easter goodies or toys makes it easier to keep track of them. Also, regular gentle reminders and frequent checking in on their things can prevent loss and support independence. While these obsessions might seem puzzling, understanding that they serve emotional and cognitive needs helps in providing compassionate care. Sharing these small moments and learning from them has been one of the most meaningful parts of my caregiving journey.
