Ever since I was young I’ve wanted braces so badly to fix my teeth. I remember it started in the first grade when they started to come into an overbite that so many kids pointed it out. I was the first kid in my class to be told I needed braces, before I even knew what they were.
During,
After begging for years, I finally got them when I turned 16. I felt embarrassed to get them so late, most people I went to school with had gotten them already and we’re getting them off. Despite this, I was still grateful to even get them at all.
After,
This was one of the hardest days of my life. When they came off I was happy for a second, but then I remembered all of the awful things said to me to get me in my orthodontist’s chair in the first place. I also thought for some reason my face would drastically change. The truth is, it changed a little, but my teeth changed the most. I feel like I lost a part of who I am by fixing them. Part of me regrets it. I do know however that it’s for the best for my jaw health. I still have work to be done to get the color to be better. But hey, it could be worse. I hope there’s someone out there who can relate to this somehow. I also know that this is a first world problem. Overall I’m happy that I got the privilege to get them, and I feel a lot freer with them off. It’s going to take a while for me to get some confidence in how different I look without them, but I know I’ll get there.
... Read moreIt's a question many of us secretly ponder: do braces make you sexy? Or, more accurately, will getting them off make me feel truly confident and attractive? The journey with braces is so much more than just straightening teeth; it’s a profound experience that touches on self-image, vulnerability, and ultimately, self-acceptance.
Before I even considered braces, dealing with an overbite often made me feel less confident, especially when smiling. The 'before' phase, as shown in many transformations, highlights those initial insecurities. We dream of that 'after' moment, hoping it will magically transform how we feel about ourselves.
Then comes the 'during' phase. For years, I wore my braces, and honestly, there were days I felt acutely aware of them. Taking that first mirror selfie with braces on felt intimidating, wondering if my smile, now filled with metal, was still 'me.' It's common to feel a bit self-conscious, and sometimes our perception of 'sexy' takes a backseat to just getting through the day. Friends might not notice, but we notice every wire and bracket. Learning to smile authentically with braces is a journey in itself, and it teaches resilience.
Finally, the day arrives – braces off! Seeing those straightened teeth in the 'after' photos is a huge milestone. There's an initial rush of relief and joy. We expect to feel instantly 'sexy' or perfectly confident. But sometimes, as the original article beautifully describes, there's an unexpected wave of mixed emotions. It's not always an instant confidence boost. Your face might change subtly, and you might even miss the familiar feeling of the braces. This feeling of 'losing a part of who I am' is incredibly real and valid. It’s about adjusting to a new facial aesthetic, even if it's technically an improvement.
So, how do we navigate this journey to truly feeling 'sexy' or confident with our new smile? It’s not just about the physical transformation; it’s about the mental and emotional one too.
Embrace the Process: Remember that braces are a temporary step towards a healthier, more aligned smile. Focus on the long-term benefits for your jaw health and bite, not just aesthetics.
Redefine 'Sexy': True attractiveness radiates from confidence, self-love, and a genuine smile, regardless of minor imperfections. Your unique features contribute to your beauty. A straight smile is a fantastic asset, but it’s one piece of a beautiful puzzle.
Positive Self-Talk: It sounds cliché, but actively challenging negative thoughts about your appearance is crucial. Instead of focusing on what you perceive as flaws, celebrate the progress you've made.
Oral Care is Key: Keeping your teeth clean and healthy, both with and after braces, will naturally boost your confidence. A healthy mouth is always attractive!
Patience with Perception: It takes time to get used to your 'new' smile and face. What feels different to you might look perfectly natural and wonderful to others. Give yourself grace and time to adjust to your post-braces appearance.
Consider Whitening: If teeth color is a concern after braces, talk to your dentist about safe whitening options. This can be the final touch that makes you feel truly radiant.
Ultimately, the goal isn't just a 'sexy' smile, but a healthy one that empowers you to smile freely and confidently. Your journey is unique, and every step, from dealing with an overbite to finally showing off those straightened teeth, is a testament to your strength and self-care. You deserve to feel amazing!
