Sulcatas, also known as African spurred tortoises, are the third-largest species of tortoise in the world. This means planning for a spacious outdoor enclosure is crucial as they mature. Their habitat needs to be secure, offering plenty of room to roam, graze, and dig. Their diet primarily consists of high-fiber, low-protein foods like various grasses, hay, and leafy greens. We make sure Timmy gets a diverse range of fresh produce daily, avoiding fruits and high-oxalate vegetables in large quantities. Hydration is also key; a shallow water dish accessible at all times is essential for them to drink and soak. Proper humidity and temperature control, especially for younger tortoises, are important for their shell health and overall well-being. We’ve learned that a warm, humid hide is a must-have for comfort and growth. What truly makes Timmy a treasure is the unique bond we’ve formed. He's incredibly curious and surprisingly affectionate for a reptile. Watching him explore, bask in the sun, or munch on his favorite greens brings so much joy.
