Common myths about psychiatrists! 👩🏾‍⚕️

There’s a lot of misinformation, stigma, and confusion when it comes to mental health and the mental health field. And with that, comes a lot of myths about psychiatry!

By definition, psychiatry is the medical specialty that focuses on the treatment of mental health disorders while is psychology is the study of mental health and behaviors. Psychiatrist MUST have medical doctorate and must have competed medical school in psychiatry. Psychologists have advanced degrees (PhD or PsyD) in clinical psychology. Though psychiatrists can prescribe medications and medical treatments, psychiatrists are also trained in non-medical interventions such as various types of therapies. Psychiatrists and psychologists work together and are often in collaboration to ensure patients are receiving comprehensive care!

... Read moreOkay, so you're diving into understanding psychiatry, maybe for a class or just personal curiosity, and you're looking for some solid 'notes' that cut through the noise. I totally get it! When I started learning, there was so much confusion, especially around what psychiatrists actually do. Let's break it down into easy-to-digest points, perfect for your study guide. Psychiatry vs. Psychology: The Real Deal (Myth Debunked!) One of the biggest "COMMON MYTHS ABOUT PSYCHIATRY" is thinking it's the exact same as psychology. It's not! While both are crucial for mental health, here's the quick breakdown, addressing the myth that "Psychiatry and psychology are the same thing": Psychiatrists (MD): These are medical doctors who have completed medical school and specialized in psychiatry through a residency. This means they can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and administer medical treatments. Crucially, they also receive training in various forms of psychotherapy. Psychologists (PhD or PsyD): These professionals typically hold advanced degrees (Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Psychology) in clinical psychology. Their expertise lies in psychotherapy (talk therapy), psychological testing, research, and behavioral interventions. They generally cannot prescribe medication (with exceptions in some specific states). Think of it this way: a psychiatrist is like a medical doctor specializing in the brain's health, while a psychologist is like an expert in the mind's behavior and thought patterns. They often work together to provide comprehensive care. Beyond Meds: What Psychiatrists Really Do (Another Myth Busted!) Another huge misconception I often hear is that "Psychiatrists only prescribe medications." This couldn't be further from the truth! While prescribing medication is a key tool, especially for complex conditions or when biological factors are significantly impacting mental health, their training goes much deeper. Psychiatrists are also skilled in various forms of psychotherapy (talk therapy), including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, and interpersonal therapy. They often use a combination of approaches tailored to each individual's unique needs, focusing on biological, psychological, and social factors. They conduct thorough diagnostic evaluations to understand the bigger picture of your mental well-being, not just symptoms. When to Consider Seeing a Psychiatrist (Practical Notes) So, when might you need to meet with a psychiatrist instead of, say, a therapist or counselor? From my experience, if you're struggling with symptoms that are significantly impacting your daily life, or if previous treatments haven't been effective, a psychiatrist can offer valuable insights. They're particularly helpful for conditions like severe depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or certain anxiety disorders that often benefit from medication. They can also provide a comprehensive diagnosis and rule out any underlying medical conditions affecting your mental health. Remember, seeing a psychiatrist doesn't automatically mean you'll be prescribed medication. It means you're getting a thorough evaluation from a medical doctor specialized in mental health, who can then discuss all available treatment options with you – from therapy referrals to lifestyle changes, and yes, if appropriate, medication. I hope these 'notes' help clarify some of the vital aspects of psychiatry and dispel those common myths. Understanding these distinctions is so empowering, whether you're considering a career in mental health or just navigating your own well-being journey!
