Tips on being an efficient resident! 🏃🏾‍♀️

When I was a medical student, I also wondered how residents were able to carry so many patients, see the patients, finish their notes, and still have time to teach the students during the day! Now some days can be much longer than others, but I’ve found that creating a workflow for your day to maximize efficiency can help a ton so you’re not stuck working on your notes at home at 10 PM!

One effective strategy is creating your own smart phrases for common tasks and documentation, which can save valuable time on notes. For instance, using standardized templates or shortcuts during patient encounters allows for quicker documentation while ensuring comprehensive care. Additionally, delegating tasks can significantly ease your workload. Encourage medical students to assist with calling collateral information or conducting preliminary assessments, thereby allowing you to focus on more complex patient interactions. Creating a structured daily workflow not only streamlines patient management but also contributes to a more balanced residency experience. Regularly reviewing and adjusting your strategies based on what works best for you will further enhance your efficiency and effectiveness as a resident. Remember, burnout is common in the medical field, so adopting these practices not only benefits your professional responsibilities but also supports your overall well-being.
