3 Reasons You SHOULD NOT Get Shiba Inu
As much as I adore their foxy faces, the truth is, a Shiba Inu isn't the right fit for every home, and it’s crucial to understand why before you bring one into your life. Many people, myself included, are drawn to their striking appearance, but their unique temperament definitely requires a specific kind of owner. Understanding Their Independent Nature and Stubborn Streak One of the biggest eye-openers for me was just how truly independent Shibas are. When you hear 'independent,' it often translates to 'stubborn' in action! Unlike some other breeds that live to please their humans, a Shiba Inu will often weigh the benefits of obeying a command against what they'd rather be doing. This isn't to say they can't be trained – they're incredibly smart! But they use that intelligence, sometimes, to outsmart you. I've heard so many stories, and experienced some myself, where a Shiba will know exactly what you want but choose not to do it because there's no immediate reward for *them*. This makes recall training particularly challenging, and believe me, you don't want a Shiba off-leash in an unsecured area with their strong prey drive and escape tendencies. Patience, consistency, and highly motivating treats become your best friends. High Energy and the Infamous Escape Artist Another significant point that often surprises potential owners is their energy level and their knack for escaping. These are not couch potatoes! Shibas need regular, vigorous exercise to be happy and healthy. A quick walk around the block won't cut it. They thrive on activities that engage both their bodies and minds, whether it's long hikes, dog sports, or challenging puzzle toys. Without enough mental and physical stimulation, they can become bored, which often leads to destructive behaviors or, worse, them attempting to 'escape' your yard. Their high energy, combined with their independent nature, makes them incredibly resourceful. I've heard of Shibas climbing fences, digging under them, and even figuring out how to open gates. A securely fenced yard (and I mean really secure) is non-negotiable, and they should never be left unsupervised outside, even for a moment. The Aloof Personality: Not Your Typical Cuddler Finally, let's talk about their personality. Many people dream of a dog that's always by their side, eager for cuddles and affection. While some Shibas can be affectionate on their own terms, they are generally known for their aloof personality. They might enjoy a good snuggle when they initiate it, but often prefer to be near you rather than on top of you. They're not typically the type to greet visitors with exuberant tail wags or to tolerate constant petting from strangers. This can be a bit of a shock if you're used to more overt, people-oriented breeds. It also means they might not be the best fit for families with young children who might not understand a dog's need for personal space. For me, understanding this aspect helped manage my expectations and appreciate their unique way of showing affection. So, while their charm is undeniable, truly understanding these traits – their independent and stubborn training challenges, their high energy and escape artist tendencies, and their often aloof personality – is essential. A Shiba Inu can be an incredibly rewarding companion for the right person, but they definitely aren't a 'set it and forget it' kind of dog, especially for first-time owners.
