🌿Wild Greens That Are Edible & Medicinal🌿
Black Medic, is another plant growing all over our property. It covers a good chunk of our grass and we love tossing it in smoothies, salads, and using it topically to get the medicinal compounds. Here’s how I use it:
Wound healing + inflammation relief: I love using fresh leaves as a poultice or infused oil for cuts/scrapes—the astringency tightens tissue, and anti-inflammatory compounds calm swelling. Bonus: Young leaves add a hint of protein to support repair!
Kidney/bladder Support: Steep dried aerial parts as tea (tastes earthy, almost like green tea!) to gently flush fluids and ease mild UTIs. The diuretic action pairs well with its fiber content (when eaten young), which keeps digestion moving with detox.
Cough/congestion soother: Its mucilage coays irritated throats—brew leaves in hot water (add honey!) for a demulcent tea. Add some for plant-based amino acids to soups/stews.
Antioxidant boost: Loaded with flavonoids, it fights free radicals when taken as tea or tincture. Toss young leaves (raw or dried) into smoothies—they’re fibrous, mildly nutty, and sneak in trace proteins for a green “multivitamin” vibe.
Skin: Mash fresh leaves into a paste (or infuse in oil) for rashes/burns—it’s cooling and speeds healing. Fiber? Not topically, but munching young greens supports gut-skin health from within.
Enjoy! 😉
