Purchasing power
The Dollar's Diminished Value
Since 1913, the dollar has lost 99.4% of its purchasing power against gold and 98.22% against silver. Unlike these finite metals, the dollar is fiat currency, unbacked by a physical commodity. Governments can print more, inflating the supply and eroding its value. Gold and silver, being finite, act as "safe haven" assets. The dollar's link to gold was severed in 1971, accelerating this decline. (My book, link in profile, details gold/silver's role in your finances.)
