Next Right Thing
In the middle of recovery, life can feel overwhelming. We often wonder about the future, about what's next, or if we’ll ever find our way out of the chaos. But recovery, much like faith, isn’t about mastering everything all at once it’s about focusing on the next right thing.
The 12-step program teaches us to take things one day at a time. Each step we take, guided by the principles of the program, is an act of faith. We don’t need to have all the answers; we only need to make the next right decision in the present. God’s Word is our guide, a lamp to our feet, showing us the next step in the dark.
Jesus didn’t promise us an easy road, but He did promise to be with us every step of the way.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28).
This doesn’t mean that our struggles will disappear, but it means that He will help us carry the load, and He will guide us through the journey.
In moments when you feel lost or unsure, remember this: You don’t have to worry about the entire road ahead. Focus on the next right thing. It could be as simple as reaching out for support, praying for strength, or choosing not to relapse. Holding a door open. Not making emotional decisions.Trust that God will give you the strength to take that next step.
God, thank You for guiding me through this journey of recovery. When the path feels unclear or overwhelming, help me to focus on the next right thing. Give me the courage to take that step, no matter how small, knowing that You are with me every step of the way. Amen.
"Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil."
🪧 This verse reminds us: you don’t have to know the whole road just stay focused, keep walking straight, and keep doing the next right thing.
God
Comfort those who need comforting. Heal those who need healing.
During recovery, it is common to feel overwhelmed by the uncertainty of the future and the challenge of overcoming struggles. The key message to focus on the "next right thing" helps break down the recovery process into manageable, faith-guided steps. This approach aligns closely with the principles of many recovery programs, such as the 12-step program, which encourage taking each day one at a time. The phrase from the OCR content, "If you don't change your direction, you'll keep crashing in the same spot," serves as a powerful reminder that progress in recovery requires conscious choices and changes in behavior to avoid repeating harmful patterns. By focusing on just one positive action—the next right thing—you create momentum and avoid feeling paralyzed by the scope of the entire journey. Faith plays a crucial role in this process. Biblical verses like Matthew 11:28 (“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”) offer comfort and reassurance that, although challenges remain, divine support is constant. Trusting God as a guiding light, "a lamp to our feet," helps maintain focus and courage, especially in moments of confusion or temptation. Practical examples of the "next right thing" include reaching out for support, offering kindness to others, praying for strength, or consciously choosing actions that avoid relapse. These small, deliberate choices build a foundation for sustained healing and growth. Moreover, the passage encouraging setting one's gaze straight ahead emphasizes the importance of steadfastness and discipline in recovery, suggesting that staying the course without distraction or deviation helps maintain progress. In summary, recovery is not about having all the answers at once but about faithful navigation step by step, supported by community, spirituality, and intentional action. This perspective encourages self-compassion and perseverance, empowering individuals to overcome setbacks and continue moving forward on their path to healing.
