Psalm 118:24 is a well-known Bible verse that states: "This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it" (NKJV). It encourages recognizing each day as a divine gift, urging believers to choose joy and gratitude regardless of circumstances, as God is sovereign over the day.

... Read moreHave you ever wondered about the rich history behind the verses that uplift us daily, like Psalm 118:24? I certainly have! While I cherish its message of joy and gratitude, I recently explored its fascinating journey through time, especially how it connected to renowned composers like Handel. This powerful declaration, 'This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it,' found in Psalms 118:24, is more than just a beautiful line of scripture. It's part of the Hallel psalms (Psalms 113-118), which were traditionally sung during Jewish festivals like Passover, Pentecost, and Sukkot, celebrating God's deliverance and constant presence. Its inclusion in such significant liturgical moments highlights its profound message of divine providence and the call to celebrate the present moment as a gift from God. The verse encourages us to choose joy and gratitude, regardless of our circumstances, knowing that God is sovereign over each day. This timeless message resonated deeply through history, finding its way into Christian worship and, eventually, into the masterpieces of classical music. George Frideric Handel, whose name often comes up when discussing settings of this phrase, was a prolific composer of oratorios, anthems, and other sacred works, heavily drawing from biblical texts. When we ask, 'who chose the biblical texts' for Handel's compositions, it's important to understand his creative process. Handel himself rarely selected specific biblical passages directly from scratch. Instead, he collaborated with skilled librettists or scriptural compilers. These individuals were tasked with assembling texts that fit the specific occasion or theme of a commissioned work. For example, the well-known *Utrecht Te Deum and Jubilate*, where the phrase 'This is the day which the Lord hath made' prominently appears in the Jubilate, had its texts compiled by figures commissioned for the celebration, such as John Arbuthnot. These librettists would carefully select verses that aligned with the celebratory or devotional intent of the commission, often drawing from the King James Version (KJV) for its poetic language and widespread familiarity in English-speaking contexts. So, the 'choosers' were primarily these librettists or compilers working on behalf of the patrons who commissioned Handel's magnificent music. Despite the complex historical process of text selection, the enduring power of Psalms 118:24 remains. Its inclusion in Handel's grand works only amplified its message, making it known to even wider audiences and cementing its place in both spiritual and cultural heritage. Understanding these historical layers only deepens my appreciation for 'This is the day which the Lord hath made.' It's not just an ancient verse or a beautiful musical piece; it's a timeless call to embrace each moment with faith and gratitude, a practice that continues to enrich my own morning prayer and daily life.
