My 5 year career plan as a nurse!
As much as I love the emergency room and being a critical care nurse, I know that the high-stress nature of the ER is not sustainable for me in the long run. However, I recognize that I still have so much to learn, and for the next two years, I want to continue building my expertise in emergency medicine—ideally as a per diem ER nurse. This will allow me to refine my critical thinking, quick decision-making, and advanced assessment skills while giving me the flexibility to explore other career pathways.
Looking ahead to the next five years, I want to transition into a role that still challenges me intellectually but with a more balanced workload. I am particularly interested in research or education, as both would allow me to apply my clinical experience in a meaningful way while reducing the physical and emotional toll of bedside nursing. Research would enable me to contribute to advancements in patient care and evidence-based practice, while education would allow me to mentor the next generation of nurses, something I find incredibly rewarding.
Beyond that, I am passionate about integrating holistic care into my practice. While Western medicine provides essential life-saving interventions, I believe that incorporating Eastern medicine principles—such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and mind-body techniques—can enhance patient outcomes and overall well-being. In the long term, I want to explore ways to bridge these two worlds, whether through further education, certifications, or even working in a setting that embraces integrative medicine.
To achieve these goals, I plan to:
• Continue working in the ER to strengthen my clinical expertise and adaptability.
• Seek opportunities for professional development, such as taking courses or certifications in research, education, or holistic health.
• Network with professionals in research, academia, and integrative medicine to gain insight into potential career paths.
• Look for roles that allow me to gradually shift into research or education while maintaining some clinical practice.
Ultimately, I want to shape a career that is fulfilling, intellectually stimulating, and aligned with my values as a nurse. By combining my experience in critical care with my passion for education and holistic health, I hope to create a meaningful impact in healthcare while maintaining a sustainable and rewarding work-life balance.
