Finally Learning to Tattoo

2025/7/14 Edited to

... Read moreIt's true, I really did QUIT my job to learn TATTOOING! For years, the idea of becoming a tattoo artist felt like a distant dream, but one day I just knew I couldn't ignore that passion anymore. The decision to leave my stable career was terrifying, but also incredibly liberating. I realized that if I wanted to truly embark on this tattoo industry learning journey, I had to commit fully. It’s been a whirlwind of emotions, from pure excitement to moments of self-doubt, but the drive to create art that lasts a lifetime keeps me going. One of the first and most crucial steps I took was immersing myself in research. I devoured articles, watched countless videos, and connected with artists online through forums and social media. Finding the right mentors and resources is absolutely paramount. That's when I stumbled upon a particular book – a comprehensive guide to tattoo design and techniques – that genuinely changed my life. It wasn't just about specific technical skills; it opened my eyes to the rich history, the ethical considerations, and the profound artistry behind tattooing. It helped me understand that this isn't just about drawing on skin; it's about storytelling, building trust with clients, and executing precise craftsmanship. My main focus right now is mastering AMERICAN TRADITIONAL tattooing. There's something so timeless, bold, and iconic about its classic imagery, strong lines, and limited color palettes. It's a style that demands immense precision and a deep understanding of composition and flow. Learning it has been a fascinating and often humbling challenge. I spend countless hours practicing designs, not just on paper in my coloring book (yes, adults use them too!), but also on various types of practice skin. It’s definitely not as easy as it looks! Every single line, every shade, every color application requires immense patience, a steady hand, and meticulous attention to detail. The mental focus needed for hours can be exhausting, but the progress, however small, is incredibly motivating. If you're thinking about starting your own tattoo industry learning journey, my biggest advice would be to be patient and incredibly persistent. It's a long and demanding road, and there will be days when you'll feel like you're not making any progress at all. But it’s vital to celebrate the small wins, keep practicing, and never stop learning. Building a strong portfolio, thoroughly understanding sterilization protocols, and even just mastering how to properly set up and break down your station are all absolutely critical steps. This journey is as much about developing a thick skin (pun intended!) and resilience as it is about developing a steady hand and artistic skill. It's tough, but seeing your art come to life on someone's skin is, I imagine, the most rewarding feeling in the world, and I can't wait to experience it fully as a true tattoo artist.

How I’m Learning to Stop Overthinking✨
I used to overthink everything—what people thought of me, if I said the right thing, if I was making the right choices. It had me stuck, second-guessing myself instead of just living. But I realized overthinking wasn’t helping me—it was just draining my energy and holding me back. Here’s what’s hel
