But honestly, for the longest time, I just thought of them as a tasty treat. It wasn't until a friend asked me 'are mussels healthy to eat?' that I really started to dig into the nutritional facts. I mean, we're told to eat more fish, but what about these shelled wonders? So, I decided it was 'Time to eat' some mussels and also 'Time to research' their health benefits! What I discovered totally blew me away! Mussels are not just delicious; they are an absolute powerhouse of nutrition. First off, they're an incredible source of lean protein. If you're looking to build muscle or just stay full and energized, a serving of mussels delivers a significant protein punch without a lot of extra fat. This is fantastic news for anyone trying to maintain a healthy diet. Beyond protein, mussels are packed with essential vitamins and minerals that our bodies crave. They're particularly rich in Vitamin B12, which is crucial for nerve function and producing red blood cells. Many people, especially those on plant-based diets, can struggle to get enough B12, so mussels offer a fantastic natural source. I also learned they contain a good amount of iron, which is essential for preventing fatigue and keeping your energy levels up. For someone like me who's always on the go, that's a huge plus!
