My personal take is that Lernen represents a more conventional, yet incredibly potent, form of magecraft compared to Frieren's unique style. He appears to be a pillar of the current mage society, giving him a distinct flavor within the cast of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. His role as a proctor for the First-Class Mage Exam also gives him an interesting position. It's not just about his combat ability, but his judgment and understanding of magic.
