I personally understand how difficult a long deployment, with extended separation from loved ones, can be. I, however, had the support of my family and the American people when my ship deployed. I cannot imagine how difficult deploying to a unpopular conflict would be, and it bothers me not to be giving those men and women unconditional support. But I truly believe that this conflict was ill conceived and has underpinnings that may even be criminal, and I look forward to those who involved the US in it being brought forward to explain their motives. And perhaps to be punished for them.

The added reality of following orders from leadership that soldiers may personally oppose only heightens this struggle. Throughout my experience, I found that peer support among service members and clear communication from command helped to alleviate some of this burden. Moreover, the context surrounding conflicts such as the Iran war often carries complex political motives. Many veterans and military families wrestle with ethical questions about the justifications for such engagements. It’s crucial for democratic societies to hold decision-makers accountable and demand transparency to ensure that military involvement aligns with lawful and moral grounds. This approach not only supports the troops by acknowledging their sacrifices but also upholds the values for which they serve. Lastly, understanding the risks—from physical dangers like jet blasts and rotor hazards mentioned in the operational environment to the psychological impact—helps civilians appreciate the full scope of what deployed personnel endure. Sharing these insights can foster greater empathy and support from the public towards those in active combat roles, regardless of one’s stance on the conflict itself.
