Many people feel that agencies like ICE and Border Patrol have adopted excessively militarized tactics that exacerbate fear and diminish civil liberties rather than fostering safety and justice. From my personal observations and conversations with others affected, a major issue lies in the lack of transparency and accountability within enforcement operations. For instance, officers conducting raids or detaining individuals often lack proper identification or operate in ways that prevent public trust. To counter this, it’s crucial that police officers be in uniform during any enforcement activity, with clearly visible personal identification such as name badges or unique numbers. Another key aspect is the transportation and detention of suspects or detainees. Vehicles used for transport should be clearly marked with official emblems, contact information, and identifiers that promote accountability. Additionally, body cameras and vehicle video systems are vital tools—they should remain active throughout public interactions and the footage must be securely stored in unalterable formats, available for review to ensure ethical conduct. Detention conditions also warrant immediate reform. Secure facilities must be clean and uncrowded, protecting the dignity of individuals held. Where such accommodations lack, alternatives such as monitored release should be considered to uphold humane treatment. Ultimately, defunding and abolishing ICE does not mean removing the responsibility of immigration enforcement but rather reshaping it into a service aligned with justice, respect for human rights, and community safety. Reforming Border Patrol along these lines promotes a policing culture that reduces militarization and oppression. Engaging in community dialogue about these reforms can empower affected individuals and create a more transparent system. Sharing these concerns and proposals within local forums and social platforms can generate momentum for policy changes that prioritize dignity and accountability over aggression and fear.
