Throughout my life, I've encountered many labels—from geek to nerd to more hurtful names—but the term 'woke' has always stood out to me as something positive. Being 'woke' reflects an awakened awareness of social injustices and a deep compassion for others. In fact, as highlighted by a quote attributed to Pope Leo XIV, to be woke is to be "awakened by compassion, humbled by grace, and committed to justice, not just for some, but for all." When people use the combined term 'woke libtard,' it can feel like an attack, but I choose to see it differently. It places me in the company of many who strive for equity and social justice. This reclamation of the term empowers me rather than diminishes my identity. In today’s polarized environment, understanding labels beyond surface-level insults is crucial. If we consider 'woke' as a call to be more empathetic and active towards fighting inequality, the term transforms from a pejorative into a badge of honor. It reminds us that growth comes through compassion and that standing up for justice requires both humility and resolve.
