Perm rod curls on locs: day 9
The way I be yearning for a shampoo after retwisting my hair… 🥴
My perm rod curls lasted 9days! && of course they could have lasted longer but I wanted to shampoo!
When I get a little more length I want to try pipe cleaner curls.
I’m curious, what’s your go to curling method for locs? Share your thoughts below?

I'm so glad my 9-day perm rod curls on locs journey sparked some curiosity! While my original post was about their amazing longevity, I know many of you might be wondering how I get those curls in the first place, and how to make your own loc curls with perm rods last. So, I wanted to share a bit more from my personal routine and some tips I've picked up along the way. My Personal Routine for Perm Rod Curls on Locs First things first, getting those perfect perm rod curls on locs starts with the right foundation. I always make sure my hair is freshly washed and conditioned, then I let it air dry a bit until it's damp, not dripping wet. This is crucial! Too wet, and they'll take ages to dry; too dry, and the curl won't set well. I usually apply a light setting foam or a curl-defining mousse specifically made for natural hair. This helps with hold without making my locs stiff or flaky. Next, I section my locs. I find that smaller sections give me tighter, more defined curls, while larger sections create a looser, wavier look. For my 9-day set, I went for medium-sized sections. I take each loc, smooth it out, and then wrap it around the perm rod from the tip up to the root, making sure the ends are tucked in securely. The key here is tension – not too tight to cause discomfort, but firm enough so the loc stays put. Once all my locs are on rods, I either sit under a hooded dryer for a couple of hours or, if I have time, let them air dry completely overnight. Patience is a virtue here; removing them too soon can ruin the curl! Once they're completely dry, I carefully unroll each rod, separating the curls gently with my fingers for added volume. Tips for Making Your Loc Curls Last Longer Achieving 9 days of perm rod curls on locs wasn't just luck! A few habits definitely help extend their life. My number one tip is protecting them at night. I always sleep with a silk or satin bonnet. This reduces friction and prevents the curls from getting squashed or frizzy. I also try to avoid excessive moisture or steam, like in a hot shower, without covering my hair. If I know I'll be somewhere humid, I might spritz a very light anti-humidity spray, but I try not to overdo it as product buildup can weigh down locs. Another trick is to resist the urge to constantly touch or separate the curls. The less manipulation, the better! When I do need to refresh them, I might gently separate a few curls near my face with a little oil on my fingertips to reduce frizz, but I avoid re-wetting them unless I'm ready for a full re-set. What About Pipe Cleaner Curls for Locs? You might remember I mentioned wanting to try pipe cleaner curls in my original post, and I've seen that some of you are curious about them too, even searching for 'pipe cleaners for locs near me'! Pipe cleaner curls are another fantastic way to add texture and bounce to your locs. They typically give a tighter, more spring-like curl than perm rods, which is why I'm excited to experiment with them when my locs get a bit longer. You can find pipe cleaners at most craft stores or online. Look for the thicker, bendable kind that are sturdy enough to hold your locs without snapping, but also soft enough not to snag your hair. The process is pretty similar to perm rods: you'll section your damp locs, apply a setting product, and then wrap each loc around a pipe cleaner. The advantage is that pipe cleaners are flexible, so you can bend and shape them to create different curl patterns or even sleep in them more comfortably than rigid perm rods. I'm imagining some really fun, tight spirals! Once I try them, I'll definitely be sharing my experience. Until then, I hope these extra tips help you achieve and maintain beautiful loc curls!
