Skincare Red Flags You Shouldn’t Ignore (From a Dermatologist)
Skincare Red Flags You Shouldn’t Ignore (From a Dermatologist)
We’ve normalized irritation in the name of “results.” But healthy skin should not feel inflamed, tight, or constantly reactive.
Here are skincare red flags I see all the time in clinic:
~“It burns, so it’s working.”
No. Persistent burning or stinging usually means barrier damage not effectiveness.
~ Layering too many actives
Retinol + glycolic acid + salicylic acid + vitamin C + benzoyl peroxide = inflammation overload.
~ Over-exfoliating
Daily scrubs, acid toners, and at-home peels can thin your protective barrier and worsen redness, acne, and hyperpigmentation
~Skipping sunscreen
If you’re using anti-aging or acne treatments without daily SPF, you’re undoing your progress.
~ Switching products every week
Skin needs consistency. Give products 4–6 weeks unless irritation occurs.
~DIY skincare trends
Lemon juice, baking soda, toothpaste on pimples — these disrupt your skin’s natural pH and can cause burns or dermatitis.
~ Treating oily skin too aggressively
Stripping your skin often triggers more oil production and more breakouts.
~Believing “medical grade” equals better
That term isn’t regulated. Ingredients and formulation matter more than marketing.
⚠️ When to see a dermatologist:
• Sudden widespread rash after starting a new product
• Blistering or severe peeling
• Dark spots getting worse with OTC acids
• Painful cystic acne or early scarring
• A changing mole mistaken for “sun damage”
• Persistent redness that doesn’t improve
Healthy skin is about barrier protection, strategic actives, and daily sun protection not aggression.
If your routine feels harsh, complicated, or constantly irritating… that’s your sign to simplify.
