Guide to long healthy hair from your board certified dermatologist

As a dermatologist, one of the most common questions I get is: “What’s the secret to long, healthy hair?”

The truth is, there isn’t one magic product. Healthy hair usually comes from small habits that you stay consistent with over time. 💗

A few things I personally recommend:

Apply scalp serum directly to the scalp, not just the hair

Use the lowest heat setting possible when styling

Choose soft scrunchies instead of tight elastics

Avoid hairstyles that pull too tightly on your hair

Stick to a simple routine with a gentle shampoo, conditioner, and a weekly hair mask

Remember, healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Be patient, stay consistent, and focus on protecting your hair from daily damage.

What’s one hair care tip that has made a difference for you? 👇

... Read moreIn addition to the key tips shared by a board-certified dermatologist, I've found that understanding your hair type can significantly enhance your hair care routine. For example, those with fine hair benefit from lightweight scalp serums that don't weigh hair down, while thicker hair may need richer formulations to maintain moisture at the scalp. One habit I swear by is parting my hair in multiple sections to apply scalp serum evenly. This ensures every part of the scalp gets nourishment, promoting healthier hair growth, just like recommended. Also, I limit the use of heat styling tools and always choose the lowest heat setting, which reduces breakage and keeps hair strands strong. Soft scrunchies have replaced tight elastics in my routine—this simple switch minimizes tension and prevents hair from pulling out or breaking. Avoiding tight ponytails and braids has helped me reduce scalp stress and hair loss. Consistency matters more than quick fixes; I stick to a routine with gentle shampoo and conditioner suited to my hair's needs and treat my hair with a weekly moisturizing mask. This weekly nourishment step makes a huge difference over time, especially in combating dryness and maintaining hair’s natural shine. Finally, healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. I take time to gently massage the scalp during washing to stimulate blood circulation, which supports stronger follicle health. Patience is key—results won't happen overnight, but with steady care, the improvement in hair strength and length is noticeable. For anyone struggling with hair care, my advice is to listen to your hair’s signals and adjust your habits accordingly. Share your own hair care tips and experiences—I’d love to hear what has worked for you!
