Aging skin naturally develops wrinkles over time, but certain habits can accelerate this process, making preventative care essential. One key insight from dermatologists involves the impact of sleep positions on skin aging. Sleeping face down or on your side repeatedly presses your skin against the pillow, causing creases known as "sleep lines" or "pillow wrinkles." Over years, these lines can deepen and become permanent wrinkles, particularly noticeable in your 40s and 50s as smile lines or fine lines around the eyes. Training yourself to sleep on your back is an effective but often overlooked strategy to reduce mechanical pressure on the skin. Back sleeping minimizes skin compression and helps maintain skin smoothness by preventing the repetitive folding and creasing that degrade collagen and elastin fibers responsible for skin elasticity. Beyond sleep posture, maintaining a consistent skincare routine that includes moisturizing, sunscreen use, and antioxidant-rich products supports skin health and slows aging signs. Regular dermatologist consultations can provide personalized guidance on antiaging treatments and wrinkle prevention techniques. Incorporating these lifestyle changes and cosmetic tips now will pay dividends in preserving youthful, resilient skin over the next 20 years and beyond. Making conscious choices about how you sleep, combined with expert-recommended skincare, is a powerful combination to combat the visible effects of aging.

Best advice I received for this is to put a pillow under one side while on back, so it’s as if I’m sleeping in my side but I’m actually not. This was the advice given to me when I was pregnant and had a dvt. I couldn’t sleep on my back and couldn’t sleep on my sides because the dvt was in my groin. I also had to elevate the leg on the side it was in lol
