Picking electives to Expand your career options !!

Typically fourth year ( or last year ) of residency you have the option to do electives in specialties of your choice to be able to expand your career options. What do you pick? Ask yourself these questions.

1. Do you want to sub-specialize? For example in Psychiatry you can do child and adolescent, forensic, geriatric, addiction, etc. If so, you can do rotations in those specialties to get more experience to help your future career prospects.

2. Do you know where you want to work ( inpatient, outpatient, emergency department, private practice, etc)- you can also gear your elective towards that specific area of interest to finalize your career choice.

It is essential to reflect on whether you wish to sub-specialize in areas such as Psychiatry, where options like child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric, and forensic psychiatry can provide added expertise. Additionally, consider your preferred work environment. Are you inclined towards inpatient settings, outpatient clinics, or perhaps private practice? Tailoring your elective choices towards these interests can significantly influence your skill set and job readiness. You may also want to seek rotation opportunities that expose you to diverse medical practices, which can aid in confirming your career interests. Ultimately, making informed elective choices will pave a smoother path to your desired career trajectory in medicine.
